GLENDIVE- A Billings man accused of the 2008 murder of Susan Casey in Glendive appeared Tuesday morning in District Court.

Walter Larson Jr. appeared before Judge Richard Simonton Tuesday morning. The hearing set a trial date for Nov. 26. The trial is expected to be eight days.

On March 27, Larson pleaded not guilty to one count of felony homicide and one felony count of tampering with evidence.

Similar to previous Larson hearings, one-half of the court room was packed with family and friends of Susan Casey. Most stared at Larsen throughout the proceedings.

Larson, who has shaved most of his hair since his last court appearance, sat close to the wall, nearly hugging it, in the courtroom before and after his case and spent his time either looking at the judge or looking down. He did not meet the eyes of the onlookers.

Judge Simonton said that electronic coverage will be allowed in the case. He also noted that there is the potential for Larson’s attorney, former chief public defender Randi Hood, to move to dismiss because of a delay in arraignment. Hood, on Larson’s behalf, has until June 29 to make that and any similar motions and to produce a witness list.

No further court dates are scheduled for Larson until a final pre-trial on Nov. 20.

- Trial Date Set For Accused Murderer: Walter Larson, Jr., the Billings man accused of the 2008 murder of Susan Casey in Glendive, appeared in District Court in Glendive before Judge Richard Simonton on Tuesday. The hearing set a trial date for November 26, 2012. The trial is expected to last eight days. Casey was reported missing in April 2008; her body was recovered on May 6, 2008, from the Yellowstone River near Fallon. Larson was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, on Wednesday morning, February 22, 2012, by a Montana Division of Criminal Investigation agent and a Glendive Police Department officer, with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department. Court documents state that Larson strangled Casey to death and threw her body into the river.

- Sherry Arnold Murder Suspects In Court: Michael Spell and Lester Waters, Jr., are scheduled to be formally charged in court on Tuesday afternoon with deliberate homicide in the death of Sidney teacher Sherry Arnold.

- Change Of Plea in Belgrade Case: James Bryant, charged with three counts of parental interference for not returning his children to their mother in Belgrade seven months ago, changed his plea to guilty in Gallatin County District Court. Bryant plead guilty to the first count of parenting interference, a felony. In exchange the prosecution dropped the two other counts of parenting interference. According to the district court, the agreement carries a sentence of 4 years in a Montana State Prison. Bryant was extradited back to Montana after he was stopped off the coast of South Florida late last month on a sailboat with his children, headed for the Bahamas. Bryant is scheduled to be sentenced June 27th.

- Sex Offender Facing Jail Time: Donald Stanfield, a man who teaches ballet to children in Kalispell, may be going back to jail after failing to register as a sex offender. Stanfield, 26, was teaching ballet to children as young as three years old at the Northwest Ballet School and Company. He was given a six-year deferred sentence in 2008 after pleading guilty to one felony charge of sexual intercourse without consent. Stanfield was originally accused of raping and molesting one girl from the age of 7 until she was 16, along with another girl from the time she was 11. He now may have to serve the entire six years in jail and face additional time for not registering as a sex offender.

- Blackfeet Oil Gas Agreement: Governor Brian Schweitzer (D-MT) has signed an oil and gas tax agreement with the Blackfeet Tribe. The document lays out how oil and gas companies which are drilling on tribal lands will be taxed. Schweitzer says the agreement prevents companies from being taxed twice. The tribe will receive 50% of the oil and gas production tax revenue that the state collects. Then the tribe’s government will have discretion over how to spend it. TJ Show, business chairman for the tribe, noted, “The tribe can do what they see as fit, whether that is economic development, helping our law enforcement or helping our hospital in health care.” Schweitzer noted, “There is a so-called ‘Alberta Bakken’, which is a similar formation that comes right down through the Blackfeet Nation and many geologists are very optimistic that it will be a good producer of oil.” The agreement only applies to new development, not existing production.

- Frontier Flies Into Great Falls: Frontier Airlines took to the skies over Great Falls on Monday morning, as it ushered in service to and from Denver. The inaugural flight was nearly full, and airport employees and board members greeted passengers as the first fight landed. Frontier will offer a seasonal service to Denver and its connections through the end of the September. To keep the Frontier flights year round, the Great Falls flight market needs to grow by 25 percent.

There seems to be a lot of armed robberies, burglaries and property destruction, even into many churches lately.

I think Billings has a good mayor, police chief and police force, but I believe that our city is growing so much that we need more police officers and police cars to handle the increased problems.

I notice that the Glendive police college is graduating their two-year class May 11 and awarding their graduates with degrees in police work. They are very well trained and would make fine officers. This is a good time to hire some of those men on the Billings department.

There would be an increase in property taxes to do this, but it would be small and it would be well worth the increased protection — the sooner the better for the residents of this fine city.
